HIGHLIGHTS
SSMC has been a key partner in Orange County’s development. For this project, our team led a vital project to expand the county’s benchmark inventory. Over 17.1 miles, SSMC strategically placed 29 monuments, ensuring accuracy and accessibility. With precise execution, SSMC delivered comprehensive datasheets, exceeding expectations and cementing its role in Orange County’s continued growth.
SERVICES PROVIDED
- Control Survey
- Utility Designation
SSMC has held a continuing Surveying and Mapping contract with Orange County since 1991. With a population of nearly 1.5 million and an economy largely driven by Orlando’s many theme parks, Orange County’s growth is steady and impressive. To ensure that developers, engineers, etc., have the tools they need to effectively maintain that growth, the county has been continually expanding its inventory of available control-ready benchmarks. And SSMC has played a huge part in that expansion.
For this project, SSMC held prime responsibility for an elevation bench run over a span of 17.1 miles that utilized all our disciplines. The process started with our teams selecting a basic location for each of the 29 monuments, about a half mile apart from each other. SSMC worked closely with Orange County to determine a preferred route for the run. With everything in place, our firm identified locations in which the two different types of benchmarks can be set. Each marker was placed in a position that is invisible to the general public, but easy to locate for those who need to use them.
The main deliverables provided by our firm to the County at the close of the project included a datasheet, essentially a graphical snapshot of the benchmark, its name, number, the horizontal and vertical values for it and a description of how to find it. Our team closed this $60,000 benchmark run at 0.05’ well within their allowable error of 0.145’.
