Since September of 2000, SSMC has held a Continuing Professional Services Contract with the City of Orlando. As improvements for the city’s infrastructure are planned and executed, SSMC assists the city’s staff at all milestones, for the purposes of planning and design. Existing stormwater assets require constant maintenance and improvements are an ongoing process as the need for increased stormwater capacity rises. As a result, SSMC’s Land Surveying & Mapping and Subsurface Utilities Engineering (SUE) divisions were tasked with providing a comprehensive understanding of existing features and subsurface facilities at multiple signalized intersections in downtown Orlando.

To better facilitate stormwater planning and design, SSMC performed a topographic survey at each intersection in accordance with Chapter 5J-17 F.A.C. For the purposes of conflict mitigation and utility verification, the SUE division utilized non-destructive vacuum excavation methods for utility location (QL-A) in conformance with ASCE C-1-38-02 to open 6” wide by 6’ long trenches across each lane. This required all work to be done at night with temporary traffic control (T.T.C.) coordinated by Flash-Rite, Inc. as well as city staff and Florida Highway Patrol officers. Once all QL-A locates had been completed, survey technicians gathered the data, and SSMC office personnel prepared a drawing in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 for delivery. All utility verification efforts were performed in conformance of F.S. Chapter 556, Underground Facility Damage Prevention and Safety Act while complying with all OSHA, local, and state safety procedures.
