Duke Energy-Rio Pinar
As part of the Duke Energy Reliability Enhancement Project, Duke Energy Florida (DEF) identified and deemed it necessary to rebuild the existing 230 kV line as well as the Econlockhatchee Substation and Rio Pinar Substation to better serve its customers. This line rebuild of the four-mile transmission corridor would see all lattice towers replaced with steel monopoles (single pole).
For the purposes of design, field engineering, and conflict mitigation, the Subsurface Utilities Engineering (SUE) division performed, “Initial Discovery (Quality Level B),” in a 25’ radius around each of the 55 proposed pole locations. By utilizing electromagnetic pipe and cable locators as well as ground-penetrating radar, SSMC SUE technicians field marked subsurface utilities in conformance with ASCE C-1-38-02. Working closely with the Engineer for utility verification (Quality Level A) and field engineering, any proposed pole locations found to have potential conflicts were excavated, utilizing vacuum excavation in a 6’x6’x5’ cube to determine a “clear,” hole. To expedite field efforts on such projects, SSMC coordinates directly with Utility Asset Owners (UAOs) listed within Sunshine 811 submitted tickets as well as adhering to all Duke Energy Florida, OSHA, state, and local safety procedures. Additionally, all Temporary Traffic Control (T.T.C.) needs are met and provided in-house.
