Seminole County

The Lake Harney Basin is the easternmost watershed in Seminole County, covering roughly 22 square miles (14,000 acres). Due to flooding caused by recent extreme weather events and being an area of older development with no detailed evaluation of the stormwater drainage characteristics on record, the County undertook the Lake Harney Watershed Flood Resiliency Plan. SSMC was commissioned by Geosyntec Consultants, Inc. to perform a series of Hydraulic and Hydrologic (H&H) topographic surveys at specific locations within the basin for the purpose of stormwater modeling.

Hydraulic surveys included the location and determination of all pertinent structure data, including water surface elevations, flow lines, cross-sectional areas, materials, conditions, and invert elevations upstream and downstream at any structure within the reach of the survey. To control costs, SSMC employed RTK GPS to establish local controls at remote locations, providing the required vertical and horizontal accuracy. Conventional survey techniques were used to collect precise location and elevation data for each required hydraulic element. Then survey teams created field notes and sketches with detailed measurements and conditions assessment of desired drainage control elements and devices. Omni-directional (panoramic) images were collected to provide engineers with 180°x360° views of each survey location and structure interiors. Survey data, scanned pdf field notes, and images are used to create and are included within a GIS (Geographic Information System) that is designed to be compatible with stormwater modeling software, allowing engineers to easily migrate field data into their modeling software.
